A platform might have the potential to bring enormous value its users. However, without a well-orchestrated launch strategy that coordinates sufficient number of users onto platform, this will not be realized. Stigma and Self-Fulfilling Expectations of Criminality
A convicted criminal suffers not only from public penalties, but from stigma, the reluctance of others to interact with him economically and socially. Conviction can convey useful information about a person, which makes stigmatization an important and legitimate function of the criminal justice system, quite apart from moral considerations. Whether stigma will operate in this way depends on exp...
متن کاملExpectations and Contagion in Self-Fulfilling Currency Attacks
This paper shows how expectations-driven contagion of currency crises can arise even if the currency market has a unique equilibrium when viewed in isolation. The model of Morris and Shin (1998) is extended to allow speculators to trade in a second currency market. If speculators believe that a devaluation of this other currency will make a domestic devaluation more likely, they will engage in ...

Economists have long argued that the best, surest way for a central bank to do its job is to adopt some sort of rule and stick to it. They reason that a central bank’s short-term objectives may be inconsistent with its long-term goals; a rule should prevent the bank from undermining long-range goals for the sake of short-term results.1 Using a rule also makes a central bank’s actions more trans...
متن کاملSELF-FULFILLING EXPECTATIONS AND THE INFLATION OF THE 1970s: EVIDENCE FROM THE LIVINGSTON SURVEY
Using survey data on expectations, we examine whether the post-war data are consistent with theories of a self-fulfilling inflation episode during the 1970s. Among commonly cited factors, oil and fiscal shocks do not appear to have triggered an increase in expected inflation that was subsequently validated by monetary policy. However, the evidence suggests that, prior to 1979, the Fed accommoda...

Adolescents' negative social expectations of their peers were examined as long-term predictors of problematic self-reported social functioning. Early adolescent negative expectations were hypothesized to predict risk-averse functioning in late adolescence that would ultimately contribute to confirmation of those expectations. Utilizing observational data and friend- and self-reports from a comm...
